Drunken from their triumph at Adrianople, the Goths set to the conquest of Eastern Rome and threaten the city of Thessaloniki. While the men of the German Cruiser Saarbrücken are still trying to prove their usefulness to the Roman Empire, the resistance against the time-travellers grows stronger. Mighty clergymen scheme against the growing influence of the Germans, and on the Saarbrücken itself the seeds of treason are planted ... and not only there.

I enjoyed the first novel, and the second moves the storyline along well. The toughest part for me is the slightly awkward grammar scattered throughout. I wonder if the text is translated from German or something. If it wasn't for that, I'd give it five stars. Nice to see an alternate history series that isn't based on American protagonists.Product details

The Emperor Men 2 Betrayal eBook Dirk van den Boom Timo Kümmel Reviews
I liked the story line and characters, but someone with better English language skills should have proofread this. I believe the writer is German from how the sentences are constructed. Many times I had to decide what was meant to be said. I also had issues with how words were cut off at the end of a line of print- such as myself, with my on one line and elf on the next. I found this to be annoying. But I am a retired Teacher, and expect better.
I really like this book, and can't wait until the next.
Somebody complained about the writing, but I think it is more a problem with the translation. Either they used a computer to do the translation, or the translator wasn't aware that the American way of speaking is a lot different.
An American editor could have helped, but it was easy to guess what the writer meant to say.
Very good alternate history Sci-fi. Some of the narrative and dialog is a bit strange having been translated from the author's German original but the core story and characters more than make up for any little imperfections.
I was surprised at how poorly written this book is; I don't recall the original being that bad. I managed to read the entire book because I'm still interested in the premise and the story line and I'll likely read the next one when it comes out.
I was hooked from the first book, this one is another great.
Well researched history (even though we're beginning to diverge).
If you like alternate histories such as 'the ring of fire' or 'The destroyermen' then you'll like this series.
My only grumble is that the book finished too soon!
I am still willing to buy more books in the series, even if they are pretty light. The author has some good takes on the social history of the end of the Roman Empire. His characters have enough substance that we can believe in them and understand their motivation. We have sympathy for a pair of young lovers, as an example. He sets up situations where the heroes might well fail, which is hard to do in a realistic way. Also refreshing to have WWI era German Imperial Navy sailors as the center of the story.
So far so good. Will order out the next installment.
This was a 5 star story ruined by a poor job of translation. Have been a fan of what if time travel tales like this one ever since de Camp's Lest Darkness Fall. Obviously this idea is in keeping with the Ring of Fire books. Van den Boom knows his history, develops characters well, and I imagine in his native German tells the story equally well. The problem is that the translation is lousy. Since I can't read it in German I'm passing on the next in the series.
