I do not have this new binding of the book. I have the original hard cover published in 1895, the version for sale is a reproduction of an out of copyright book. Mine is unfortunately not in the greatest shape. It is however, one of my favorite books, and I have since sought out other Dell Hair books based on this book. The author, Dell Hair, is a Michigan born poet that served military time as a drummer, and later as a policeman in the city of Toledo, Ohio. He writes frequently in this book on topics of military, and nature themes; some with deep faith or light hearted wit. His poetry tends to follow set meter and rhyme schemes. Some of the titling is amusing itself, such as "Composed While serving a 10 day sentence in a dark cell for loud and boisterous singing"
Here are some descriptions of a few select examples.
"A Brave Wife" which is a small 3 octave stanzas, describing a wife that aides her husband's unit in battle, bringing water to the wounded and ends up dying on the field.
"My Michigan" which is a nine tercet stanza with refrain written with admiration for both the natural and the human elements.
"The Destruction of Wellington, Kansas" describing as an eyewitness the Tornado that decimated the town
"Waiting for the Cow" in which the main body of the poem tells this great fantasy revealed at the close to merely be a daydream.
This is one of my favorite books, and is a good example of the writing style from the period.
